Hanoi, 19/12/2024 – The Italian Government has allocated two contributions of 200,000 Euros each to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Vietnam and the World Food Programme (WFP) in Myanmar. These funds support the emergency response efforts following the impact of Typhoon Yagi, which struck both countries last September.
In Vietnam, Yagi caused the death of over 300 people and affected 26 provinces. The local government has registered 3.6 million in need of humanitarian assistance. IFRC, in close collaboration with the Vietnamese Red Cross, is providing an integrated assistance package to approximately 130,000 vulnerable individuals in 7 of the most affected provinces, helping communities recover following the passage of the typhoon.
In Myanmar, the typhoon’s impact in the Northeast has affected approximately 1 million people, and the deaths recorded are over 360. Further, severe damage in the agricultural sector has been reported, directly impairing food security of a population already distressed by humanitarian crises. WFP is working within the UN system’s flood response strategy by providing emergency food assistance to the most affected population
Both initiatives follow Italy’s commitment to strengthening the humanitarian emergency response in Vietnam and Myanmar.
