Hanoi – The National Statistics Office (NSO) of Vietnam, under the Ministry of Finance and in collaboration with UN Agencies in the country, celebrated World Statistics Day 2025 under the theme “Statistics for a Sustainable Future in the Digital Era – Vietnam’s SDG Monitoring Journey.” The event brought together senior government representatives, development partners, and international organizations to discuss the modernization of Vietnam’s statistical system and its critical role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In his greeting message, the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Phạm Minh Chính, commended professionals in the statistical sector for their dedication and contribution to national development, encouraging continued innovation and collaboration to ensure that no one is left behind in the data era.
The Director General of the NSO, Ms. Nguyễn Thị Hương, emphasized that quality, timely, and inclusive data are essential foundations for policymaking and sustainable growth.
The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) Office in Hanoi highlighted the importance of strengthening the institutional independence of the NSO as a prerequisite for credibility, transparency, and public trust in official statistics. Referring to a previous successful initiative with the NSO, AICS also underscored Vietnam’s potential role as a regional leader in South–South and triangular cooperation, through the sharing of knowledge and experience with neighboring countries such as Lao PDR and Cambodia.
Building on the successful collaboration between AICS, ISTAT, and the NSO through the project “Improvement of the Statistical System in Vietnam”, Italy now supports a new regional initiative entitled “Strengthening Statistical Capacities for Climate Change Management in the Mekong Region”. The initiative will enable the NSO to act as co-trainer and regional hub for capacity-building on climate and environmental statistics, fostering data-driven governance across the Mekong Region involving also Lao PDR and Cambodia.
World Statistics Day 2025 served as an opportunity to reaffirm Viet Nam’s commitment to building a modern, independent, and digitally ready statistical system, as a pillar for sustainable and inclusive development. On the other hand, AICS renewed its support for this journey by promoting institutional capacity, innovation, and regional cooperation towards a more open and participatory data ecosystem.
