Hanoi – Within the framework of the project “Improving the Capacity of Solid Waste Collection and Treatment to Protect the Environment and Adapt to Climate Change in the Northern Region of Quang Tri Province”, part of the Viet Nam – Italy Debt for Development Swap Program, a delegation from the AICS Hanoi Office participated in the training session “Collection and Treatment of Municipal Solid Waste: Providing Guidance on Classification”, held in Gio Linh District on June 10th.

Representatives from Quang Tri province’s Department of Finance, the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the Quang Tri Province Center for Natural Resources and Environment Monitoring, the Gio Linh District People’s Committee, People Committee of involved Communes, attended the event. Also present at the opening ceremony were Ms. Chiara Aranci, Communication Officer, and Ms. Pham Van Anh, Liaison Officer of the Program, from AICS Hanoi.

This occasion served as an opportunity for the Italian Cooperation to raise awareness, enhance community participation, and promote shared responsibility in solid waste management. Emphasis was placed on how simple daily actions, such as separating waste at home and reusing materials, can contribute to collective efforts for a greener future.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R): These are the three essential principles needed to improve waste management, seen not merely as a technical issue, but as a cultural and behavioral shift.

The training in Gio Linh, along with a similar session held the previous day in Vinh Linh District, marked the first on-field activities of the project since its approval in December 2024. The training included three main components:

  • Introduction of the project “Improving the Capacity of Solid Waste Collection and Treatment to Protect the Environment and Adapt to Climate Change in the Northern Region of Quang Tri Province” within the Debt-for-Development Swap Viet Nam Italy and the implementation plan at commune levels.
  • A technical session on the classification of solid waste.
  • Guidance on applying the solid waste classification at source model with focus on 3R content in the district.

These practices are already being implemented in the primary school of Gio Linh District, which the AICS delegation also visited. Although students were on summer break, signs of environmental education were visible, including waste separation bins and a milk carton collection point. The School Director explained how waste management has become integrated into the daily curriculum for over 1,000 students.

This initiative stands as a promising step toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
