Hanoi – The Italian Cooperation has disbursed a contribution of one million euros to the Myanmar Humanitarian Fund, managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Established in 2007, the Fund is a rapid and flexible mechanism that enables the implementation of life-saving humanitarian interventions across the country.

Myanmar, four years after the military takeover, is facing a severe humanitarian crisis. The situation has further worsened due to the devastating 28 March earthquakes, while ongoing conflict between various armed groups and the Myanmar Armed Forces continue to place civilians at risk and fuel widespread instability, hampering the work of humanitarian actors.

Since the beginning of 2025, the Italian Cooperation has activated several funding modalities in support of the affected population, for a total commitment of approximately 4.5 million euros:

  • contribution to the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) for supporting the immediate earthquake emergency response;
  • the launch of an Emergency Call for Proposals addressed to Italian Civil Society Organizations;
  • a humanitarian flight coordinated with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for the delivery of emergency relief items and essential goods to earthquake-affected communities;
  • and, most recently, the contribution to the OCHA-managed Myanmar Humanitarian Fund.

Civilians are the most affected by both conflict and disasters, and today the people of Myanmar are enduring both tragedies. The multiple tools employed by the Italian Cooperation for humanitarian response aim to reach the broadest possible segment of the population in need, in line with the principle that “no one should be left behind.”

According to the latest data from OCHA, the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar remains one of most underfunded in the world, with 21.9 million people in need of humanitarian assistance out of a total population of almost 57 million.
