University of Turin and funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI). Michele Boario, Program Coordinator at the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) Hanoi, represented AICS by presenting its collaborative initiatives with the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC). This partnership, initiated in 2022—two years after Italy attained ASEAN Development Partner status—has resulted in three active development cooperation programs in the region.

The seminar, chaired by Prof. Giuseppe Gabusi of the University of Turin, also featured Italian Ambassador to Singapore Dante Brandi. Ambassador Brandi highlighted Italy’s growing relevance in the Indo-Pacific, urging a holistic consideration of its strategic role in fostering EU-ASEAN collaboration.

The discussions addressed critical themes for future EU-ASEAN relations, including:

  • The role of the EU and its Member States in the Indo-Pacific and the importance of a coordinated approach involving Italy.
  • Shared global challenges such as conflict resolution, climate change, and the governance of artificial intelligence.
  • The need for collective, inclusive solutions transcending national interests to achieve effective global governance.

A Strategic Role for Italian Cooperation

“The approach of Italy’s development cooperation extends beyond funding projects—it is rooted in building partnerships based on trust, shared values, and a long-term vision,” said Michele Boario during his presentation. He emphasized that as ASEAN navigates the future shaped by digital transformation, climate challenges, and geopolitical shifts, Italy remains committed to fostering collaboration that promotes inclusive and sustainable growth. “Our aim is to enhance communities across the ASEAN region, ensuring that no one is left behind, as outlined in the 2030 Agenda, while leveraging Italy’s sector expertise and aligning with ASEAN’s principles.”

Mr. Boario also highlighted how the Italy-ASEAN partnership serves as a model for addressing global challenges through inclusivity and sustainability. He reiterated Italy’s dedication to reducing development disparities and advancing regional integration, emphasizing the importance of shared goals in achieving long-term resilience and prosperity.

The workshop underscored the value of Italy’s contributions to regional stability and its role as a bridge between the EU and ASEAN in addressing pressing global issues. Through a coordinated, multilateral approach, Italy and its partners aim to strengthen regional integration and foster a sustainable future in the Indo-Pacific.
