PRESS RELEASE

Hanoi, 17 April 2023. The ceremony: “Building governance through official statistics: a successful project” will be held on 19 April 2023 for the presentation of the results of the initiative that is coming to an end: “Improving the Statistical System in Vietnam” financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and implemented by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) for a total budget of 650,000 euros of public development assistance. The event will be held at the headquarters of the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) in Hanoi and will be chaired by Dr. Nguyen Thi Huong, Director General of the GSO and the Ambassador of Italy to Vietnam, H.E. Antonio Alessandro.

The “Improvement of the Statistical System in Vietnam” initiative contributed to the strengthening of the national statistical system in Vietnam with the aim of improving the statistical information necessary to guide development processes in the country. In detail, the technical assistance to the GSO has ensured the strengthening of statistical capabilities for the development, production and dissemination of reliable and updated data on topics of crucial importance for the country and the international community, such as energy, environment, sustainability and climate change, and the strengthening of cross-cutting sectors such as institutional strengthening, coordination capacity and information and communication technology (ICT).

During the ceremony the GSO will present the pilot report “Urban Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change-related Indicators for Viet Nam”. The report is characterized by innovative elements, such as: a selection of indicators relating to the urban context and climate change in line with the most up-to-date international standards, the use of metadata and the development of analyzes relating to these indicators. This will contribute to strengthening the role of official statistics in the country, building a network of producers and users of relevant data to monitor objectives related to climate and environmental sustainability, well-being and health of the population in different areas of the country.

During the second session of the event, a high-level forum entitled “Smart coordination, effective statistics” will be held with the participation of experts from the United Nations Statistics Department (UNSD), the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the media, academia and a Vietnamese Line Ministry who will share their respective perspectives on the value of statistics and the role of coordination between institutions that produce data and institutions that hold administrative data.

The event “Building governance through official statistics: a successful project” is part of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Vietnam, testifying to a fruitful experience of sharing good practices and strong, high-level partnerships. value.
