In the context of rapid development of tourism industry in Vietnam in general and in Quang Nam province in particular, the Government of Vietnam has been standing in front of the challenge of improving heritage sites condition and ensuring their valorisation, as well as ameliorating quality of tourism services and management. To offer a helpful hand, through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in Vietnam, the Government of Italy in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Quang Nam Province and the Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism have implemented a Project named “Vocational Training Centre for Restoration and Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Quang Nam, Vietnam”, especially focusing on My Son archaeological site – which were recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO.
The Project provides intensive training in restoration and conservation of cultural heritage, with the specific objective of improving the quality of management, restoration and conservation capacities of relevant Vietnamese institutions as well as valorising the archaeological sites in Quang Nam province. The courses are conducted by Polytechnic University of Milan (POLIMI) and Carlo Maurilio Lerici Foundation, with the technical support of Institute of Conservation, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
On that basis, the Feasibility Study Report and cooperation agreement between Vocational Training College and POLIMI were approved on 20th July 2017 and the follow-up work of the Project has been initiated since November 2017. Using the fund, the Project Management Unit (PMU) completed the installation of offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, computers in Tam Ky, classrooms, working rooms in My Son, and equipment for Quang Nam Museum. The first course consists of 38 high profile students ended successfully on 28/11/2017, of which 36/38 students have been granted with graduation certificates according to evaluation criteria for assessment by experts. Among them, 3 excellent students were selected to join 3-week study journey in Italy.

Following the success of the first course, the second course will be held shortly in the first 6 months of 2019, including Theoretical program taught at Quang Nam Technology College from January to March 2019 and Practical program implemented in My Son Sanctuary from March to June 2019. The second course has been received 32 applicants, most of them work in government offices in the field of Museum, Culture, Site management. 20 scholarships were given to excellent applicants. In the coming time, the PMU also plans to install and put in use the laboratory in Quang Nam Museum, organize to visit and do research on Cham monuments and make plan for the second phase of the Project.
On the occasion of opening the second course, the Graduation Award Ceremony for Course I and Kick-off Workshop for Course II took place in Tam Ky, Quang Nam Province on 15th January 2019. The ceremony was held solemnly with the presence of Mr. Martino Melli – Director of AICS Hanoi, Mr. Le Van Thanh – Vice Chairman of Quang Nam’s People’s Committee, Mr. Nguyen Quyet Thang – Principle of Vocational Training Centre, Prof. Mariacristina Giambruno – Representative of POMILI, Mrs. Roberta Mastropirro – Project Technician Advisor, Ms. Federio Barocco – Archaeologist expert and the representatives of many relevant local agencies.
