Conference: Training and Research Strategy for Safeguarding the Archaeological Complexes in the Mekong Region

International conference of “Training and Research Strategy for Safeguarding the Archaeological Complexes in the Mekong Region” was held on May 27th and 28th at My Son, Quang Nam. The event was chaired by the People’s Committee of Quang Nam province and the Embassy of Italy in Vietnam, with the presence of H.E. Ambassador Antonio Alessandro, Dr. Martino Melli – Director of the Hanoi Office of AICS, Dr. Le Van Dung – Deputy Secretary of the People’s Committee of Quang Nam province, Dr. Tran Van Tan – Vice President of the People’s Committee of Quang Nam province together with over 20 experts from various countries in the Mekong region. The professors of the Polytechnic of Milan (POLIMI) and the Lerici Foundation also participated in the events, introducing the Project of “Vocational training center for restoration and conservation of cultural heritage”. As part of the conference, an educational visit to the My Son Sanctuary was also held.

This event took place on the occasion of the closure of the first phase of the project “Vocational training center for restoration and conservation of cultural heritage”, which is financed by the Government of the Italian Republic through AICS. In particular, AICS has financed a vocation training center specialized in archaeological restoration together with a restoration laboratory. The first phase of the project contributed to the intensive training of instructors, technicians and workers in the field of cultural monuments restoration and preservation, providing valuable knowledge in management of architectural heritage of the Cham ethnic group with the restoration of the archaeology area of My Son. Two sites selected for field practice were the G4 tower (for the architectural restoration program) and the L tower group (for the archaeological excavation program), which were restored with amazing results.

The conference also discussed on the future projects concerning the reinforcement of formation and training, with the aim of creating a regional network in South-East Asia among institutions operating in the field of cultural heritage restoration. Delivering a speech at the event, Dr. Martino Melli hoped that with the success of the project, there will be more opportunities for My Son relic area to continue to be studied and restored, thus ensuring monumental sustainability and the preservation of its millenary cultural value.

Dr. Phan Ho, Director of the Management Board of My Son World Heritage Site, stated that the project of “Vocational training center for restoration and conservation of cultural heritage” was fundamental to enable human resources training for national departments and provincial institutions for enhancement and restoration of cultural heritage. On this occasion, the People’s Committee of Quang Nam Province thanked the Italian Government for the valuable support given to the preservation of provincial cultural heritage.
